The Siliga IDP camp has received thousands of Somali refugees as the latest drought has ravaged East Africa. Fatima and her husband Abdi made the long, arduous trip to the camp on foot in the summer of 2011. The journey was extremely dangerous, with little water and no food in the intense heat. And now that they’ve been able to reach the camp, they’re facing more serious problems—including disease.

Since arriving to the camp in Mogadishu, Fatima has suffered a chest cold, and she’s also contracted malaria.

“She’s so sick—she cannot wait in the long queue to see the medics,” her husband Abdi told Islamic Relief USA. “I’m hoping Allah (swt) will provide for us.”

Islamic Relief USA supports a health clinic in Siliga that cares for the sick and injured refugees and victims of drought. A mini-bus service has even been set up so that the health team can travel to those who are too weak to make it to the health clinic for help. For those within the clinic’s vicinity, medics walk to visit the sick. Islamic Relief USA-supported health services are providing life-saving aid to victims of drought and famine in East Africa like Fatima, but medical supplies are expensive and limited.

“We need help, we need help,” said Abdi. “Allah (swt) will provide for you as you help us.” He is asking for our help, and so many families like his are suffering. Many people still need urgent care.
