Umm Saeeda lives alone, with no husband and no children. She lives in one room and her toilet is one small corner separated off by a stack of bricks. She has very little food and no one to care for her. What would we do if this was our mother?
One in five Egyptians lives in poverty, with 44% living on less than $2 per day. Unemployment is devastatingly high and even those who have struggled to achieve a high-level education do not always find themselves rewarded with a high paying job—or any job at all. Problems of poverty and unemployment in Egypt have been chronic, but political unrest in early 2011 has further taxed many families. The full effect of the current situation in Egypt is still unknown.
For people like Umm Saeeda, help is needed now.
