About The Emergency
By the Numbers
More than a quarter-million people killed
Billions of dollars in damage costs
India has been hit by several natural disasters—such as tsunamis and monsoons—during the past decade. In 2004, a tsunami in the Indian Ocean tsunami left more than 227,000 dead and caused billions of dollars’ worth of damage. Several years later, in June 2010, monsoons flooded the country, killing hundreds and destroying thousands of homes—causing some $7 billion of damage, according to reports.
How Islamic Relief Helped
Islamic Relief was quick to respond to both of these emergency situations.
- Supplied more than 250 families with clothing, utensils, essential grains and materials to rebuild their homes
- Distributed relief kits were distributed to affected families
- Provided temporary roofing material to help families rebuild
In addition to emergency response, Islamic Relief maintains a permanent office in India to help carry long-term projects to bear.
