About The Emergency
By the Numbers
Typhoon Haiyan is considered one of the most powerful storms on record
More than 15 MILLION people have been affected
About 4 MILLION people have been internally displaced
A massive storm swept over the Philippines leaving nothing but destruction in its wake. On November 8, 2013, Typhoon Haiyan’s 150 mph winds drove huge waves ashore, crashing into villages and towns, flattening buildings and ripping families apart. The storm is one of the strongest on record.
It’s been a month since the storm hit, but the emergency is far from over. Many families are still searching for food, some even looking through garbage piles to find something to eat. Water supplies were contaminated and are now unsafe to drink. Hospitals are overwhelmed and medical supplies are running low.
So many people are still searching to see what remains of their livelihoods and if they can find their missing loved ones. The tragedy has hit so many across the provinces of the island nation.
According to a report on NPR.org, “Aid groups, agencies and armed forces have yet to reach some of the remote islands. That means coming up with a final accounting of the storm’s toll may be impossible.”
The Philippines Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin told reporters: “There is no power, no water, nothing. People are desperate.”

How Islamic Relief USA Is Helping
Islamic Relief offices around the world are gathering resources and sending relief personnel to help with emergency efforts. The situation is being monitored closely, and relief leaders are creating strategies to help the most people in the most efficient ways. Here are the programs IRUSA donors are supporting now:
EMERGENCY SHELTER PROVISIONS IN BOGO CITY AND LEYTE CITY
Some 15,000 individuals, who have been severely affected by Typhoon Haiyan, are receiving emergency shelter assistance. Families will receive tents and tarpaulins to help improve their current living conditions until they can return home.
EMERGENCY SHELTER KITS IN CEBU
More than 10,000 individuals in northern Cebu stand to benefit from temporary shelter kits that are being distributed. Each kit includes a a tarpaulin and rope, a ground sheet, a blanket, cooking utensils, tools (such as hammers, nails, saws), and a plastic toolbox. This will help provide shelter for at least two months while rebuilding takes place.
Islamic Relief USA, specifically, aims to raise $1,000,000 for humanitarian efforts in Philippines, focusing on emergency assistance that may include food aid, shelter service or more. You can read reports straight from the field in “Journal from the Philippines” and “A Traveler’s Reflection.”
We need to come together for the Philippines! The more IRUSA donors who can support these efforts, the more we can help. Please donate now.
PLEASE NOTE: ALL DONATIONS MADE TO IRUSA’S PHILIPPINES HUMANITARIAN AID FUND SUPPORT THIS URGENT EMERGENCY EFFORT SPECIFICALLY. So, the more you give, the more you can help provide relief to survivors of Typhoon Haiyan.
