Islamic Relief USA’s program for Gifts in Kind (also known as in-kind donations) offers organizations the opportunity to donate material goods that fill an important need in its emergency relief efforts or its sustainable programs.
How does it work? Simply put, IRUSA receives donations of quality, nonmonetary goods from organizations that have them in surplus—items such as medicines, hospital equipment, food, clothes, tents, air or ground transportation, backpacks, vitamins, kitchen untensils, wheelchairs, diapers, toys, and more. The items are then sent to help those in need.
GIK is an incredible way to positively affect the lives of beneficiaries because it gives them direct access to some of the items they need most. And, it can benefit the groups that donate too: By gifting items, such as medicines, clothes and furniture, these companies and organizations have the opportunity to reduce waste by turning their excess into charitable resources that help our brothers and sisters in need.
How Islamic Relief USA’s GIK Is Helping
Working with a variety of organizations, Islamic Relief USA has been able to deliver thousands of vital supplies to people who needed them most in regions all around the world.
Here’s a breakdown of some of these GIK programs:
ESSENTIAL ITEMS FOR SYRIAN REFUGEES IN JORDAN
Islamic Relief USA is working with a GIK-participating organization to send containers with essential items to communities of Syrian refugees currently in Jordan, and for Jordanians in need.
Islamic Relief USA worked with a GIK-participating organization and Islamic Relief Mali to send a container of educational and health-related materials for children in Mali.
Islamic Relief USA, in coordination with a GIK-participating organization and Islamic Relief Egypt, delivered urgent medical supplies to help fill needs at hospitals that lacked adequate supplies to treat patients, including children, who needed attention.
Islamic Relief USA, in coordination with a GIK-participating organization, delivered medical and pharmaceutical items to stock clinics, hospitals and urgent care facilities in Libya.
Working with a GIK-participating organization and Islamic Relief Niger, Islamic Relief USA was able to help provide much-needed medical equipment to the District Hospital de Fillingue, Ouallam, as well as to health centers and hospitals in the Tiliberi district—facilities that serve some 85,800 patients a year. The total amount of medical supplies donated were worth hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Islamic Relief USA, in coordination with a GIK-participating organization and Islamic Relief Somalia, delivered medical and pharmaceutical items to stock clinics, hospitals and urgent care facilities in Somalia.
HOSPITAL BEDS FOR TUNISIA HOSPITALS
Islamic Relief USA worked with a GIK-participating organization and Islamic Relief Tunisia to put beds used in the opening ceremony of the 2012 London Olympics to good use: More than 318 of these beds were transferred from London to Tunisia, and donated to hospitals in three governorates: Mednine, Gafsa and Kebili. The health facilities, serving both their local community members as well as patients from nearby Choucha refugee camp (near the Libyan border), were in desperate need of additional beds. Some 25 medical institutions received beds, and more than 920,000 patients stand to benefit.
Islamic Relief USA, in coordination with a variety of GIK-participating organizations, provided hygiene kits and school supplies to homeless, refugee, and low-income community members in 14 cities across the country during its Day of Dignity event series in 2011.
